Due to the eruption of more engineered rioting in the small town of Kenosha, Wisconsin, following the shooting of Jacob Blake, the governor has decided to send 125 members of the state national guard to help the city come back from the chaos and to deter any future civil unrest.
Gov. Tony Evers, a Democrat, made the announcement on Monday night, Aug. 24, after whole swathes of Kenosha, a city with just around 100,000 people, went up in flames. In his statement, Evers said that the National Guardsmen will be there “to help protect critical infrastructure and assist in maintaining public safety and the ability of individuals to peacefully protest.” Along with this, the troops will also be assisting local first responders.
Evers further stated that the “limited mobilization” of guardsmen was ordered based on requests for aid from local officials, such as Kenosha Mayor John Antaramian, another Democrat.
The process of deploying National Guard troops to Kenosha began at 11 p.m. on Sunday, when the state of emergency was declared. Terry Rose and Zach Rodriguez, two Kenosha County supervisors, feel like other local officials may have “dropped the ball,” causing the situation to get even worse.
“Myself and other supervisors were knocking on the doors of other supervisors at 2 a.m. because the National Guard hadn’t been sent to Kenosha [quickly enough],” said Rodriguez.
Kenosha County Emergency Management Director Lt. Horace Staples submitted the request for National Guard troops at around 3 a.m., long after the rioting had already begun. This office, in turn, submitted the request to Evers, who has the final say on whether or not to activate the National Guard. The state’s National Guard members are then called to respond for deployment.
There is currently a curfew in Kenosha. It was declared at 8 p.m. on Sunday and will last until 7 a.m. on Tuesday. The curfew covers all of the city of Kenosha, as well as all of Kenosha County east of Interstate 94.
“The public needs to be off the streets for their safety,” said local officials in a press release announcing the curfew.
As soon as footage of the officer-involved shooting went viral on social media, the people of Kenosha began taking to the streets, no doubt spurred on by the Antifa and Black Lives Matter agitators currently in the city. The damage caused by the violent mob was widespread. Private and public buildings were damaged and burnt down, and many officers were seriously injured at the hands of the rioters.
Many businesses along Sheridan Road, one of the main thoroughfares in the city, were burned down by arsonists, including an Italian restaurant and a used car dealership. Footage from the night’s events show dozens of cars engulfed in flames. According to Kenosha Fire Chief Charles Leipzig, three other businesses were destroyed by the fire. The Post Office, Reuther High School, and several other businesses, including the dinosaur museum, reported being damaged by the rioters.
When the city tried to send out its fleet of garbage trucks to block the roads and control the movement of the rioters, the violent mob responded by burning them down. At least three of these burnt wrecks are located on the roads near the Kenosha County Courthouse, where the rioters began congregating after causing a lot of destruction across the city.
At the courthouse, the rioters destroyed windows and glass doors and covered the exteriors with graffiti. Fortunately, according to Rebecca Matoska-Mentink, the clerk of courts, the damage was purely cosmetic and limited to the building’s exteriors. However, there was still enough damage for the County Courthouse, as well as the nearby Administration Building, to close on Monday, with all court hearings and in-person services suspended for the day.
Alderman Bill Siel, a member of the Kenosha Common Council and whose district includes the downtown area where much of the damaged and destroyed businesses come from, said that seeing his city burnt down on Monday morning was heartbreaking.
“Having lived in downtown Kenosha for 37 years, I’ve never seen anything like this,” said Siel. “This is a district that has been increasingly vibrant.”
Siel said that a lot of the business owners in downtown Kenosha whose properties were still standing began to “batten down the hatches” in preparation for future riots.
“There is a lot of fear and anger,” he continued. Many people were out in the streets all day on Monday working to clean up broken glass and debris from the streets and sidewalks, and to help business owners board up their shop’s doors and windows.

Sherry Ludwig, who arrived at her business, Bisou Lingerie, at 1:30 a.m. on Monday to find the windows shattered and the contents of the store looted, witnessed the riot first hand. She said that what she saw looked like it came out of a horror film. At one point, she saw police officers surrounding a rioter carrying a firearm. “It seemed like there were two distinct groups of people – there were peaceful protesters and then there were hooligans.”
Rodriguez shared Ludwig’s sentiments, believing that the rioters who were involved in the destruction of Kenosha property were not members of the city’s local protest group.
“I witnessed it first hand at the scene – they were making it known. ‘We’re not here to destroy property,’” said Rodriguez, quoting the local peaceful protesters. “It hurts my heart to see so many who have poured their hearts into their locally-owned businesses have them broken into, set on fire and destroyed.
Several business owners and residents have also started complaining about “riot tourists” – people who come from all over Wisconsin, and even neighboring Illinois, to witness the carnage.
“It’s very sad,” said one African American business owner who has lived in downtown Kenosha for 20 years. “It’s uncomfortable.”
Kenosha County voted for Republicans during the 2016 election. This shows that the civil unrest perpetrated by Black Lives Matter and Antifa is spreading to Republican strongholds.
