More insanity of the stupid Left: All Philadelphia businesses must remove bulletproof glass protection or face steep fines

Time and again Left-wing politicians show me what it means to exist in a parallel universe where they never have to face reality or the inane consequences of brain-dead decisions.

If you’ve never been to Philadelphia, the “City of Brotherly Love,” you may not know that it’s got a bit of a crime problem. Like all major cities run by Leftist Democrats, Philly also has strict gun control policies which are most closely followed by law-abiding citizens.

Criminals, on the other hand, tend to ignore city statutes that forbid them from, say, carrying loaded guns on the street and then actually using them to commit crimes.

But that little reality is why many shop owners installed bulletproof glass in their businesses; they figured the expense was worth not getting accidentally killed by stray gunfire that the police, the city council and the ordinances can’t seem to prevent.

Nevertheless, because a majority of council members in Philly are idiots, they just voted to force business owners to remove the bulletproof glass from their storefronts because they are concerned those businesses are merely fronts for drug-dealing…all while making it easier to loiter and take a urination break on the sidewalk, Fox News reports.

Council members voted 14-3 to approve a bill passed by the city’s Public Health and Human Services Committee (public health in Philly apparently does not include self-protection against stray bullets from the illegal guns of actual drug dealers).

The legislation now empowers the city’s overworked Department of Licenses and Inspections to add bulletproof glass to its lengthy list of regulatory obligations. And while Councilwoman Helen Gym told Philly.com the measure does not require “mandatory removal” of bulletproof glass, it does require ‘careful consideration’ of said glass, meaning the bill will give a city bureaucracy arbitrary decision-making authority over who gets to keep their glass and who doesn’t. No doubt there won’t be any compensating store owners who are going to be forced to change their front glass from protective to not-so-protective.

Also, the bill calls for “tighter rules on seating, public restrooms and what can be sold at these stores,” according to Fox29.

Which also means the bill regulates what can’t be sold at these stores.

What’s more, as you might have guessed, there is a racial component to this lunacy. The bill, which was introduced Dec. 4 by Councilwoman Cindy Bass, who is black, “involves categorizing food establishments by size for city licensing purposes,” Philly.com reported. But the portion of the legislation that addressed the bulletproof glass “generated huge protests and polarized communities, exposing fissures involving race, class, and perceptions of immigrants.”

Many of the most affected food owners are Asian-Americans and they criticized the bill’s call for removal of the safety glass, saying it would unnecessarily expose them to being robbed, injured or killed.

But Bass — who doesn’t own one of these businesses and therefore isn’t subject to the same risks as the Asian business owners, had the arrogance to call their concerns “an indignity” (because, you know, being concerned about African-Americans committing crimes is racist).

Unbelievable. Even in far-Left cities, sometimes you can’t be far Left enough. (Related: There is nothing more despicable than a Democrat.

During a hearing on the legislation earlier this month, hundreds of beer-deli owners who use the bulletproof glass to stay alive showed up to protest, though their concerns obviously fell on deaf ears.

Not all of the council members were tone deaf idiots more concerned about racial insults than keeping people alive. Councilman David Oh, a Korean-American, said he couldn’t support the bill because he knows it will endanger his constituents.

“I will not expose [beer deli owners] or anyone else to the risk that they could be killed,” he said during the hearing.

No worries, Mr. Oh. Ms. Bass has no trouble with that, you racist.
